LORNEVILLE STOCK SALE

BIG YARDING OF STORE SHEEP

GOOD DEMAND FOR FEED LAMBS STOKE CATTLE OF BETTER QUALITY The yarding of store sheep at the weekly Lorneville stock sale yesterday was a big one, although there were not as many yarded as there were last week. The prices realized for good ewes were up to late rates, best 2-tooths bringing up to 31/-. A good demand existed for feed lambs and best sorts made up to 17/3. There was a fair number of rams offered, but these met with a poor demand.

The fat sheep entry comprised mainly ewes, the majority of these being freezing sorts. Included in the yarding, which was a fairly small one, were some very nice quality wethers. These, however, were neglected to a certain extent, selling at values about 1/6 below the prices ruling last week. Compared with the previous sale butchers’ ewes were about 1/- dearer. The majority of the fat lambs consisted of light and unfinished sorts. Export buyers were fully represented, and there was keen competition, values being about 1/- above export schedule rates.

The quality of the store cattle entered was better than it has been at past sales. The best of the pens of goodconditioned steers offered brought up to £lO. There was a light yarding of dairy cattle. The yarding of fat cattle was about the same as last week. Taking quality into consideration there was little change in values. Yardings in the individual sections at the last two sales are as follows:—

Included in yesterday’s yarding were 13 vealers and two dairy cows. FAT SHEEP The entry of fat sheep was a fairly small one and consisted mainly of ewes, of which the greater proportion were freezing sorts Some very nice quality wethers were also included, but these, to a certain extent, were neglected and sold at values about 1/6 below last week’s prices. Freezing ewes were about 6d dearer and butchers’ ewes were about 1/- dearer compared with last week. Prime heavy wethers realized from 21/9 to 22/6, good quality 20/- to 21/-, medium 18/- to 19/-, light and unfinished down to 16/6. Freezing ewes made from 8/6 downwards, according to quality and butchers’ ewes made from 8/9 to 13/3. There was only a small entry of fat lambs, the majority of which were light and unfinished. There was a full representation of export buyers and competition was keen. Values realized appeared to be fully 1/above export schedule rates. Extra prime heavy butchers’ lambs made up to 32/3, prime heavy 25/6 to 27/6, good quality freezing lambs 22/6 to 23/9, medium quality 20/- to 21/6, unfinished down to 15/6.
