SITE FOR CITY’S MUSEUM

Selection Made By Council USE OF RESERVE IN GALA STREET RESERVES COMMITTEE’S RECOMMENDATION A site on the Town Belt reserve in Gala street east of Kelvin street for the proposed museum or combined museum and library was selected by the Invercargill City Council last night. The council adopted the recommendation of the Reserves Committee which last month made an inspection of possible suitable sites. ,

“The committee is of opinion that that portion of the town belt reserve facing Gala street between Kelvin street and the drive to Queen’s Park is the most suitable location and the area available is adequate for the erection of a" museum and later for an art gallery if funds were raised for the purpose,” stated the report of the committee. “The area indicated could also be later used for a library, if the site is then considered suitable for library purposes.” The committee’s recommendation that the Museum Board be advised and that authority be given for the taking of the necessary legal steps to give effect to the decision, was adopted.
