KILLING STARTS TODAY
FIRST SHIPMENT OF CHILLED BEEF ALLOTMENT COMPLETELY FILLED The allotment for the first Southland shipment of chilled beef has been completely filled and the cattle have been assembled at the Makarewa Freezing Works for killing. The killing will begin today and the beef will be shipped by the Doric Star which is due to arrive at Bluff on Thursday. The shipment will be placed aboard the vessel the following day. Southland has been allotted one locker in the hold of the vessel for the shipment of the beef, the capacity or the locker being 800 quarters. More than 200 head of cattle have been drawn from the leading growers of beef cattle in the province, it being necessary to provide a margin of reserve to permit proper grading of the beef to comply with the high standard expected for chilled beef shipments. The following growers have contributed cattle for shipment:—Messrs A. S. Holms and Son (Waimahaka), John Carmichael (Mataura Island), T. Golden (Fortrose), C. W. H. Tripp (Pukerau), Roberts and Co. (Middlemarch), Price Brothers (Waikiwi) and the Southland Frozen Meat Company’s Makarewa and Glencoe farms. It is not expected that any further shipment will be possible this season, but it is hoped that shipments will be made in future seasons and that Southland farmers will develop a profitable trade in chilled beef. With restrictions on the export of lamb from New Zealand to Great Britain, stock raisers will require to explore other forms of production and the chilled beef offers bright possibilities.
