PENSIONS TO BE OMITTED
AUSTRALIA MODIFIES INSURANCE PLAN ATTORNEY-GENERAL QUITS CABINET (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received March 15, 6.50 p.m.) CANBERRA, March 15. The Federal Cabinet has agreed on a compromise about the national insurance scheme by which old-age and widows’ pensions will be omitted. As the Attorney-General (Mr R. G. Menzies) disagrees with the amendments he has resigned from the Cabinet and as deputy-leader of the United Australia Party in the House of Representatives. Mr Menzies has issued a statement in which he says that since September he had been at variance with the majority of the Cabinet on several matters of moment, particularly on the question of defence preparedness but had refrained from resigning in the interests of unity. He described the Cabinet’s decision to repeal the provisions of the National Insurance Act covering old-age and widows’ pensions as a “last but weighty straw.”
