TOW TRANSPORT OPERATORS
APPLICATION OF ACT URGED REMIT TO CONFERENCE OF DRIVERS’ UNIONS (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 15. A proposal that motor transport be brought under the provisions of the transport licensing regulations will be introduced to the conference of the New Zealand Drivers’ Unions in Wellington, beginning on March. 30, by a remit from the Auckland Union. The question may also form the subject of a deputation to the Minister of Transport (the Hon. R. Semple). Now that the responsibility for the issuing of licences in the centres rests with the local authorities, it is contended that under this system licences are issued without regard to whether the licensee is capable of operating on an economic basis. “We believe the bringing of town operators under the Motor Transport Act would eliminate the unnecessary waste caused by overlapping and dead mileage,” said Mr L. G. Matthews, secretary of the Auckland Union, today. He declared that in Auckland the carriers’ stands at all times of the day had trucks standing idle for hours on end.
