“GOODWILL” CRUISE CANCELLED
ITALIAN WARSHIPS RECALLED (Received February 11, 6.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, February 10. Despatches from Central America state that the visiting Italian warships have been recalled to Italy, cancelling the “goodwill” trip, because of repetition of the incidents at Panama, at Buenos Aires and Ecuador, and the fear of more incidents at other South American ports.
Two Italian cruisers on a goodwill cruise met angry crowds at Panama last Monday. Admiral Sonlgli’s car was pelted with rotten eggs when he drove to call on the President. Police reserves were called out. Feeling was high because of editorials in the Press stating that the Italian and German defence frontiers might extend to Panama Canal.
