BRITAIN’S INCREASE IN UNEMPLOYED
“BAD WEATHER ON DAY OF COUNT” (Received February 10, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, February 9. In the House of Commons the Minister of Labour (Mr Ernest Brown) said the increase in unemployed was regretted in all parts of the House, but it would be a mistake to exaggerate its significance. The increase last month was caused to a great extent by the increase in unemployment which normally follows cessation of Christmas activities being accentuated this year by bad weather on the day of the count. He also made the point that long-term employment was steadily on the decrease.
Labour’s censure motion will be debated on Thursday.
