COUNTRY TENNIS TEAM

To The Editor

Sir, —On. reading the selected country team for Saturday the first thought that occurred to me was that the Southland association appears to be so frightened that the Eastern sub-asso-ciation will pull out and' go on its own, that it thought the best thing to do was to select a practically Eastern team to play against Town on Saturday. The association seems to forget that Central is the premier team just now. The only players Central can get in the team are first and second emergencies. The association must think it was a great fluke that young players like. G. Hamilton and F. Lindsay beat M. McLeod and L. Cotterill in the Central v. Eastern match at Gore a month ago and that the last time F. Lindsay played C. Baird the score was 6-2, 6-1 in. Lindsay’s favour. The Southland selectors should not be frightened of Eastern going on its own, as most of its’ players are past their best. The younger players should be given a chance to gain experience in such matches and improve their play, which eventually will be all to the good for Southland tennis. The veterans have had their day.—Yours, etc., » OLD REP. February 2, 1938.
