CRICKET COMPETITION

SENIOR MATCHES ON SATURDAY

Gaines Played In Fine Weather

APPLEBY AND UNION IN STRONG POSITION

UTTLEY MAKES TOP SCORE WITH 75 Matches in the Southland Cricket Association’s senior competition were played in perfect weather on Saturday afternoon. The grounds were in better condition than they had been for some weeks and although there were no surprises there were some good individual performances, L, M. Uttley’s 75 for Union being the best effort of the day. Union, with three wickets down for 144, is in a strong position against Marist, which made 105 in its first innings on the Appleby ground. Old Boys fell to Appleby for 83 runs, and the Appleby side entrenched itself well with 162 runs on its first innings. Invercargill, which made only 95 against Bluff, succeeded in dismissing the port team for 67 runs, and now has lost one wicket for six runs. BEST PERFORMANCES Batting L. M. Uttley (Union) 75 E. Calvert (Appleby) 51 C. McKenzie (Appleby) 38 V. C. Poole (Union) 32 N. Ryan (Marist) 30 Bowling I. Barnett (Bluff) five for 41.

Purdue (Appleby) five for 47. T. McKenzie (Invercargill) four for 21. Sharp (Invercargill) four for 22. ' C. McKenzie (Appleby) four for 25. O’Grady (Union) three for 10. Campbell (Old Boys) three for 26. Marshall (Union) three for 29. GOOD OPENING BY UNION MARIST DISMISSED FOR 105 A nicely scored 30 by Ryan was the outstanding feature of the Marist innings against Union on the Appleby ground. Ryan opened the Marist batting with McGowan, who did not stay long with him. P. Grace was the incomer and he and Ryan brought the score to 43 before Grace was serit back on a leg decision. Ryan’s 30 was scored mostly in well placed singles, but he was missed once or twice in the slips, and once behind the wicket. The Marist batting was cautious rather than enterprising. lire attack was cpened by Marshall and Uttley, and though the latter took three wickets for 29 the honours of the day must go to O’Grady, who took three for 10. Poole and Uttley opened the batting for Union, and struck form immediately, both of them hitting the

loose ones for all they were worth. Uttley was seen at his best, and was sending the ball to the boundary whenever the opportunity offered. His sauare cuts brought him a lot of runs, and he was able on several occasions to place the ball where there was a gap in the field. He hit two sixes in his innings, his second one bringing the Union total up to 100. Poole was also in good scoring vein and had 32 up when he was caught by Fraser off Derbie. Uttley’s wicket fell soon after McGowan went on to bowl, and there was a round of applause for him when he returned to the pavilion with 75 to his credit. Shirley’s 15 was also useful, and Hamilton and Swinney were going well when stumps were drawn. Derbie bowled tirelessly for 15 overs, and two wickets fell to McGowan at a comparatively little cost. OLD BOYS OUT FOR 83 APPLEBY MAKES 162 IN FIRST INNINGS Purdue and McKenzie attacked the Old Boys batting to good effect in the match between Old Boys and Appleby, played on the High School ground, dismissing the side tor a mere 83 runs. Scandrett and Jarvis opened the batting, but the partnership was broken early. Scandrett managed to reach double figures, but most of the other batsmen failed to get so far. The last wicket partnership between Kennedy and Fraser was the best of the whole innings, but even this produced only 15 runs. Appleby had no need to vary its attack, as Purdue and McKenzie appeared to have the batsmen completely at their mercy, and towards the end of the innings McKenzie bowled four maidens in succession. Appleby did not make a promising opening, but the middle men came to light with some fine scoring. Calvert, the fourth man, scored an attractive 51 before he was caught by Robison off Pickard, and McKenzie was going 1 well at 38 when he was run out. Rid-

dell and K. Shirley also contributed a useful 19 each. Pickard, who has been absent for some time, carried the brunt of the attack, and took three wickets for 63 runs. Jarvis and Campbell were also successful, taking a couple ox wickets each at a comparatively low cost. Appleby’s score of 162 places the team in a strong position for the resumption of play next Saturday. Details:

TOTAL . 162 Bowling Analysis

BOWLERS SUCCEED ON CONCRETE INVERCARGILL SLIGHTLY AHEAD OF BLUFF Invercargill did not make a very impressive showing against Bluff on the concrete wicket at Biggar. street, and was lucky enough to dismiss the port team for an even lower score. I. Barnett, of Bluff, and T. McKenzie, of Invercargill, struck good bowling form and took their wickets cheaply. The opening partnership between Saxton and Robinson brought the score to 27, but none of the other batsmen reached double figures. The three Barnetts carried most of the bowling, I. Barnett taking five wickets for 41. Sharp and McKenzie, however, made short work of the visiting team and wickets fell like ninepins until Carson made a stand for 13.. This, and a 19 not out by McDonald, were the only things that saved Bluff from being routed completely. Sharp opened his bowling for Invercargill with three maidens, and in the next over he was hit for four and then took R. Barnett’s wicket. McKenzie, also, had the batting tied up and took four wickets for 20. The result of this match will depend almost solely on next Saturday’s play. Details: 1
