CIGARETTE PAPER MANUFACTURERS

INDUSTRY TO BE LICENSED (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 15. By a notice published in tonight’s Gazette the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) declares the industry of the manufacture of cigarette papers to be one subject to the licensing provisions of the Industrial Efficiency Act 1936. For the purpose of licensing, the industry of the manufacture of cigarette papers is deemed to include the cutting or packing, or the cutting and packing of paper wrappers for tobacco in the form of cigarettes, with or without other processes, but apart from the manufacture of paper so cut and packed. “I have declared this industry to be a licensed one/’ said Mr Sullivan in an interview, “for the purpose of holding the present position for the number of units manufacturing cigarette papers in New Zealand until such time as the Bureau of Industry has completed certain investigations concerning this industry. In the Dominion, those at present engaged in the industry are exempted under notice from applying to the bureau for licences until January 1, 1940, or such earlier or later date as rrfay be decided. Meanwhile, it will be necessary for any person contemplating the manufacture of cigarette papers to apply to the Bureau of Industry for a licence.”
