BLACKSMITH STRUCK BY IRON ROD

SKULL AND SPINE BOTH FRACTURED When an iron rod fell on him while he was carrying out repairs yesterday morning, Walter Cook, aged 58, of Clifton, a blacksmith employed at the Ocean Beach Freezing Works, suffered fractures of his skull and spine. He was admitted to the Southland Hospital at 11.10 a.m. and his condition last night was reported to be serious. SERIOUS INJURIES SUFFERED CONSTABLE DIVING FROM JETTY (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 15. Very serious injuries were suffered by Horace George Roberts, aged about 27, a member of the Rotorua police force, when diving from the jetty near the sulphur bath at Lake Rotoiti this afternoon. He was admitted to the Rotorua hospital in an unconscious state, and his conditions tonight was critical. Roberts had been in Rotorua only about 18 months. His father is a member of the police force at Riccartdn. BABY FOUND DEAD The baby son of Mr and Mrs W. T. Johnson, of Lumsden, was found dead in its bassinette at 8.45 a.m. yesterday. Mrs Johnson fed the baby, which was only four months old, at 4.45 a.m. and placed it back in the bassinette, and when she went to feed it four hours later she found it lying face downwards, dead. A doctor was called, and although artificial respiration was applied it had no effect. An inquest was opened yesterday before Mr A. F. J. Heath, acting coroner, and adjourned until tomorrow.
