DOMINION IRON AND STEEL
Plan For Industrial Expansion AUTHORITY TO EXPEND £5,000,000 (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 15. An indication that the iron and steel industry will be one of the major industries under the Governments scheme of industrial expansion in the event of the survey at Onekaka revealing sufficient ore to justify its establishment was given by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) in an interview. . The Prime Minister said that investigations were being made at _ Onekaka with the object of ascertaining the quantity of iron ore available. Without a thorough investigation it was impossible to lay the foundation of a big scheme. There would be no unnecessary loss of time in completing the investigation. Anyone with experience of mining realized that something more thorough than a surface survey was (required. Authority had been taken for the expenditure of £5,000,000 on the establishment of the iron and steel industry, but before any such move was made it was essential to know what quantity of ore was available and whether it would be sufficient to justify the establishment of the industry.
