The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) returned to Invercargill yesterday from a week-end visit to Stewart Island, where he met several deputations from the Stewart Island County Council, the school committee and private individuals. He also made an investigation into the deer problem on the island. He was accompanied on his visit to the island by Mrs Parry, Mr A. G. Harper (officer in charge of local government in the department) and Captain G. F. Yerex (officer in charge of deer stalking). The Minister will hear deputations this morning from the Southland Acclimatization Society and the Invercargill Rifle Club, and will then leave by car for Queenstown and Makarora. Mr T. L. Macdonald, M.P., has returned to Gore after attending the National Party caucus in Wellington. Mr A. R. Johnston, of Waikaka Valley, president of the Southland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union, has returned after attending a meeting of the Dominion executive of the union in Wellington.

Mr P. E. Trevella, who, has been appointed sub-manager at the Union Steam Ship Company’s Picton branch, left Bluff by the Maunganui yesterday for Wellington. Mr W. Rodgers, district railway traffic manager at Invercargill, is to leave by the express this morning foi Christchurch on departmental business. Mr E. H. Skevington, of Sydney, agencies inspector of the Orient Steam Navigation Company, will arrive in Invercargill by the express *his evening on a visit to the Invercargill agencies of the Orient Line and will stay at the Grand Hotel. Mr H. C. Gimblett, clerk of the Southland County Council, will by the express this morning for Wellington to attend a meeting of the executive of the County Clerks’ Association.

Senior Sergeant Dinnie, officer in charge of the finger-print department at police headquarters in Wellington, and Senior Sergeant Kelly, officer in charge of the arms department at Wellington, who yesterday gave lectures to members of the Police Force at Invercargill, are to leave by the express this morning for Dunedin. Lieutenant J. K. Robbie, Lieutenant A. J. Neil and Sergeant H. L. Rollands of the First Battalion, Southland Regiment, .were successful in qualifying at a heavy machine-gun course held at Burnham from November 19 to November 26. They returned to Invercaigill on Saturday evening. Mr Keith A. Fleming, of Melbourne, arrived by the Maunganui on Sunday and is the guest of Dr F. O. MacGibbon.

Bandsman A. Kirwan, of the Battalion Band, Southland Regiment, has been awarded the New Zealand service medal and the New Zealand long and efficient service medal.
