GUN-DOG TRIALS

Championship Won By Mr R. Broad SEVENTEEN COMPETITORS The Southland Gun Dog Club held its championship trials at West Plains on Saturday afternoon before a fair number of spectators. A strong wind made conditions fairly difficult and with the birds falling in heavy cover a good many dogs tailed to find all of the three birds they were called on to retrieve across the water during the day. The championship was run over three classes, the first being a single retrieve across water, with three dogs on the mark, the second class was a two-bird retrieve across water and the third was a find and flush on land. The winner of the championship was Mr R. Broad’s springer spaniel, Chum, the present New ' Zealand champion, with a score of 272 points, while Mr P. Hennessy’s springer spaniel, Sir Three Star, with 208 points and J. R. O’Brien’s Labrador. Black Caesar of Ivanhoe with 196 points, took secoittl and third places respectively. Mr R. Broad’s dog was first in one class and second in each of the other classes and undoubtedly showed his superiority in most departments. The judge, Mr G. A. Dunlop, remarked that the work of all the dogs was of a very high standard. Seventeen dogs competed in the championship classes. Puppy and novice trials, both being single retrieves on land, were also held during the afternoon and the judging was done by Mr A. G. Fraser, who reMacara (Gore), P. Crawford (Waikoikoi), J. marked that the novice class was the best he had ever judged. The winner of the puppy class was Mr H. F. Broad’s springer spaniel, Great Star, with the excellent score of 99 points and the novice class was won by Mr J. G. Pasco’s curly retriever, Judy, with 92 points. The trials were conducted in a very efficient/manner, with the president, Mr P. Hennessey in charge, Mr J. B. Pasco trials captain, and Mr J. R. O’Brien, secretary, and an energetic band of ofi ficials. The official guns, Messrs J. Broad F. Strang and T. All the placed dogs in this class gave particularly good exhibitions and there was not much between them.
