The engagement is announced of Mollie, only daughter of Mr and Mrs D. F. O’Malley, Wanganui, and Leo Celistine, only son of Mrs V. Walsh and the late James Walsh, of Winton. Mrs R. M. Hutton-Potts, Don street, returns on Tuesday from a holiday in Christchurch.

Mrs E. R. Wilson, Grey street, who is spending a holiday in Alexandra, will return early next week. Mr and Mrs John Spencer, Riverside, Kaiwera, have returned from a tour of Great Britain and Europe. The Misses A. Bennett (Orepuki), O. Casey (Auckland), A. McPherson and M. Dawkins (Dunedin) were recent visitors to Gore, when they were bridesmaids at the Casey-Fitzgerald wedding. Mr and Mrs Spencer Rowley and Miss Alison Rowley, who have been on furlough with relations in Invercargill, leave next Thursday for Wellington on the first stage of their return journey to Sumatra.

Miss F. Mayhew, who is leaving her position of typist in the Invercargill Post Office to be married, was bidden farewell by members of the staff on Thursday night. The chief postmaster, Mr H. Miller, made a presentation of a chiming clock. Mr J. Cormack, supervisor of the telegraph branch, Mr G. P. Madden, accountant, Mr J. M. McKay, of the clerical branch, and Mr W G. Nield, of the engineers’ branch, also spoke. In honour of Miss L. McLeay, who is to be married shortly, Mr and Mrs Mills, Elies road, gave a kitchen evening. Music and dancing were enjoyed and Mr J. The Ohai branch of the Labour Party held a victory ball in the Ohai Public Hall on a recent evening. Among the guests were the Labour candidate for Awarua, Mr J. A. Beck, and Mrs Beck, Mr J. J. Lynch, the Wallace Labour candidate, and Mr D. McDougall, the former Independent member for Mataura. Messrs Beck, Lynch and McDougall gave brief addresses, and Mrs J. S. Macßae, president of the Ohai women’s branch, also spoke, thanking the visitors for their attendance. Mr L. S. Edmond, president, welcomed the visitors and spoke briefly on the Labour victory at the polls. Mrs Beck was presented with a bouquet, and so wert> Mesdames Macßae and Edmonds. The hall was decorated with ferns, shrubs and bush greenery. Mr McDougall sang “Misty Islands.” Mrs Lee and her partner won a spot waltz competition, and Mr D. Craig was master of ceremonies. The secretary of the Southland Children’s Health Camp Association asks all those who have sewing or knitting for the camp to return it to Mrs Stanley Brown, Don street, before Friday, December 1.

Mrs J. A. Mangan, Tuatapere, has been the guest of her sister-in-law, Mrs J. C. Hannan, Woodlands.

Mrs C. J. Speight, Wether Hill, Ohai, with her guest, Mrs Charles Speight, Dunedin, was a visitor to town yesterday.

Mr and Mrs P. E. Trevella, Don street, with their small daughter, Wendy, leave on Monday for Picton, where they will live.

In honour of Miss Estelle Field, of the British Solomon Islands, and Mrs McCaw, of Hakataramea, who are her guests, Mrs C. J. Brodrick, Wellesley, was hostess at tea during the week. Mrs A. T. McCaw, Don street, also entertained a number of friends at tea for Mrs McCaw and Miss Field.
