DUCHESS OF ATHOLL RESIGNS
FIGHT TO REGAIN SEAT AT BY-ELECTION
LONDON, November 24. The Duchess of Atholl has resigned her seat in Parliament and will fight an immediate by-election because of a majority of the Kinross-West Perth Unionist Association Committee disagreeing with her opposition to the Government’s foreign policy. The national executive of the Labour Party has reaffirmed its decision not to associate with any other political party or group. Stewart (Labour) 14,803 CONSERVATIVE APPEAL FOR UNITY “DIFFICULT AND ANXIOUS TIMES” (British Official Wireless) (Received November 25, 6.30 p.m ; ) RUGBY, November 24, In a letter to the Conservative candidate 'in the by-election in Fylde the Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) says: “The country is passing through anxious and difficult times which call for courage and patience—two qualities in which the people have never been found lacking. The road may be long and there may be obstacles in the path, but I believe that this country, sufficiently united and resolute, may yet lead the world to lasting peace. “With that object we must be strong not only in defence but in national purpose, and that strength can come only if the Government of this country can speak with the authority of a united people behind it.”
