BEAUTIES OF THE SOUTH ISLAND

Beauty spots of the South Island, unusual views of the cities and tourist resorts, mountains, lakes, rivers and glaciers, make of the latest issue of Discovery, the South Islands Travel Association’s publication, a magazine of outstanding merit. The opening pages deal with the city of Invercargill and the mountainous scenery of die province of Southland, with its bushclad hills, its sounds and its shipping, and this section of the magazine contains some outstanding photographs. Of particular interest is the frontispiece showing an aerial view of the Sutherland Falls, in which the rock-girt Lake Quill, which feeds the falls, is shown. This is one of the few photographs which have been taken of this almost inaccessible spot. Otago, Canterbury, Westland and Marlborough each receive their share of attention in a series of interesting pictures which portray their subjects to the best advantage. With its artistic black and gold cover depicting a galleon sailing into the sunset, its novel spring binding and its magnificent examples of the art of the camera, representing the work of some of the best-known photographers in New Zealand, Discovery successfully illustrates the remarkable variety of natural beauty marshalled in so small a space in the South Island, and between its covers are seen the ice crowned mountains, fiords of rugged grandeur and green serenity, and fertile plains populated by farms, torrential rivers and glaciers moving through subtropical bush. The publication is one that would grace the table of any drawing room. It is certainly good publicity for the South Island, and is designed to attract the attention of the tourist from overseas as well as travelling New Zealanders.
