RUGBY VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA

SELECTION OF TEAM NEXT YEAR ENGLISH UNIVERSITY SIDE MAY TOUR DOMINION (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 25. Considerable discussion took place at a meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Council on tours. Mr S. S. Dean was in the chair and the New Zealand selector, Mr E. McKenzie, was present by invitation. A proposition was made by Dr G. J. Adams that a New Zealand team should be sent on tour throughout the Dominion next season, playing a series of matches, the final one of which would be against The Rest. The idea was to give the New Zealand selector every opportunity of getting the best team away for South Africa in 1940. After a long discussion it was finally decided that such a tour next season in all circumstances was impracticable.

It was resolved that the New Zealand team for South Africa be selected next year and that the chosen players be subjected to examination by medical officers a' month before the team’s departure in 1940. The team, it was pointed out, would have to leave in April or early in May. Information of a favourable nature was received from English sources about the proposed visit by a university team from England to New Zealand next season. Official word from the English Rugby Union is awaited. A visit by a Fijian team was discussed and the executive was empowered to submit a report giving the proposed itinerary and the estimated cost.
