Engagement notices must bear the signatures of both parties. Correspondence is invited on any matters affecting, or of Interest to, women. Mrs John Stronach, of Timaru, is visiting Invercargill. Mrs Alex Derbie, Pomona road, left yesterday for Dunedin and Queenstown. Miss W. Smith, of Dunedin, is the guest of her sister, Mrs J. Howe, Woodlands. Mrs B. C. Basstian, Tweed street, left yesterday for Wellington, where she will be the guest of her daughter, Mrs E. R. Bremner. Two Liverpool girls have the unusual job of walking for a living. Each week they tramp about 70 miles, testing new shoes for a Liverpool factory. Between them they have walked 60,000 miles. Sir Cyril and Lady Ward, accompanied by Miss Theresa Ward, have returned to Christchurch after a seven months’ trip abroad, which included motor tours in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and an extended visit-to the Continent of Europe. Mr and Mrs H. Jamieson and their son, of North Canterbury, and Sister Lambie, matron of the Bottle Lake Hospital, Christchurch, have been the

guests of Mrs C. J. Roseveare, Woodlands. Mr and Mrs G. Johnston, Waikaka Valley, have also been the guests of Mrs Roseveare. In a most amusing way Mrs P. C. Davie, of New Plymouth, who was a delegate to the World Council of the Y.W.C.A. in Canada told members of the Palmerston North Y.W.C.A. of a visit to see the ’’Quints,” in company with other delegates and of the varied reasons brought forward for making this trip. Quite frankly it was curiousity, Mrs Davie said. The journey of some 120 miles was made through lovely scenery, the maples all scarlet and poplars golden. Arriving at their destination the visitors found a stream of cars and the information that the children were on view twice daily at 10.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. The delegates saw the children in the afternoon haying to stand in a long queue to take their turn. A circular playground was enclosed with glass, Mrs Davie remarking that she was relieved to discover that although they could watch the children, the children could not see the curious. One child was swinging, one playing with a tricycle and one of them was playing in a sand pit. Very little time was allowed but no charge was made and then the delegates moved off to buy curios. By the irony of fate a Chinese delegate made some purchases only to find the goods had been made in Japan.
