Three thousand donations, representing £42,000, have been received in London by the House of Rothschild in response to a non-sectarian appeal for Jewish refugees issued by the leaders of British Jewry five days ago. Earl Baldwin, of Bewdley, the former Prime Minister, will broadcast on De- , cember 8 for £50,000 for the relief on non-Aryan and Christian refugees from Germany. A collection will be made in all churches on December 11. Fifteen hundred more emigrants have gone to various parts of the Empire in nine months in 1938 than in the same period in 1937. DEPORTATION FROM CANADA DELAYED OTTAWA AWAITS OUTCOME OF NEGOTIATIONS (Received November 24, 7.10 p.m.) OTTAWA, November 23. The threatened deportation of three German Jewish refugees was stayed by order from the Prime Minister (Mr W. L. Mackenzie King), who granted them permits to stay six months, pending Government negotiations with London about the admission of a stated number as settlers. One hundred and fifty Jews sailed by the Aorangi after a warm demonstration of sympathy by citizens of Vancouver. NO FRICTION IN ANY COLONY GERMANS AND JEWS IN BRITISH POSSESSIONS (British Official Wireless) (Received November 24, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, November 23. The Secretary for the Colonies (Mr Malcolm MacDonald) told the House of Commons he had received no reports of friction between Germans and Jews in any British colony. In another answer Mr MacDonald said the European community in Tanganyika was estimated at the end of 1937 to be 9107, including 2981 Germans. LEVY ON CAPITAL TO PAY FINE JEWISH PROPERTY TAXED 20 PER CENT. (Independent Cable Service) BERLIN, November 23. A capital levy of 20 per cent, on Jew- . ish property, payable in four instalments, is announced by which the fine of £83,000,000 will be collected. Foreign Jews and others with property below ■ £4OO are exempt from the levy. ! The fine was imposed as a reprisal ’ for the murder of Dr von Rath, an 1 official of the German Embassy in Paris, by a young Polish Jew. INCREASED INFLUX TO ' PALESTINE? (Mr Franklin D, I Roosevelt), who is on holiday at Warm Springs, expressed gratification with a report he said he had received that the number of Jews permitted to enter Palestine would be increased. “I have no means of knowing the. accuracy of this report, but I hope it is true,” said Mr Roosevelt.
