MORELLO’S FORM DISAPPOINTING

.FAVOURITE BEATEN IN DASH HANDICAP GOOD DIVIDEND RETURNED BY SATIN KING (Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, November 24, The Roslyn Handicap was a poor race, with Tommy Guy and Dalaruan having the finish to themselves. Traveltone and Syntax stood on the mark and at the end of a furlong Escalado and Margaret Todd also broke Passing the stands Dalaruan was clear of Bon Chance, Tommy Guy and Parrish Chimes, 20'lengths further back. There was no change in the order for the next ■round and with half a mile to go Dalaruan, Bon Chance and Tommy Guy had the race to themselves. Bon Chance broke up down the back straight and Dalaruan and Tommy Guy were together into the straight. In the run home Tommy Guy finished better than Dalaruan and won by a neck. Bon Chance was 20 lengths away third, and then came Syntax and Parrish Chimes, almost a furlong further back. It was a poor exhibition and the first and second horses were the only ones not to make mistakes. SOUTHLAND SUCCESS The Southland gelding Roan Duke scored a fine win in the St. Kilda Handicap, when he narrowly defeated Icevus and Bill B. Waitemata broke up badly at the start and interfered with Icevus, who lost several lengths. With a round to go Royal Travis had charge from Guncase, Bill B, Roan Duke, Token and Icevus with Credit Funds at the head of the others. Bill B moved up to be level with Royal Travis down the back, where Guncase, Roan Duke, Token and Icevus were handily placed. Royal Travis was still in charge at the straight entrance from Roan Duke, Token, Guncase, Bill B and Icevus on the outside. Guncase broke 100 yards from the post and Roan Duke came on to beat Icevus, with Bill B close up third. Guncase was fourth and then came Credit Funds and Token. Roan Duke went a sound race and after being in the firing line right though hung on well. Icevus looked a certainty beaten, as he lost 36 yards at the start and covered more ground than anything else. Guncase was in a winning position when he broke up. MAZAIRE LOSES GROUND Glenholme, Easter Rush and King Potts lost ground at the start of the Progressive Handicap and Marfax led past the stands from Sinbad, Golden Miller, Tinker, Anna Wong and Seascape. Glenholme and Dancing Pirate were at the head of the others. Glenholme moved up to third place down the back straight and with a round to go Sinbad had taken charge from Golden Miller, Tinker, Marfax, Anna Wong and Seascape. Attain broke up and lost all chance. Golden Mill,er took charge with three furlongs to go and he led into the straight from Tinker, Seascape and Marfax. In the run home Tinker held too many guns for Marfax and he stayed on to win well by a length. King Potts came from a long way back to beat Golden Miller, who stopped in the run home, for third. The next to finish were Seascape, Mazaire and Dancing Pirate. Tinker was well placed right through and he won rather comfortably, Mazaire lost ground at the start and was not prominent at any stage of the running. Golden Miller went a sound race, but did not finish on after being‘first into the straight. ODDS-ON FAVOURITE Logan Derby was backed down to an odds-on price in the President’s Handicap, but ne had to be driven right out to beat Southern Smile by a neck. It was

a poor race, as the whole field raced in Indian file for a mile. There was no pace on. in the early stages, the first mile taking 2min 18 2-ssec. Renown's Best lost several lengths at the start and Agile took up the running from Sea Gift, Southern Smile, Big Author, Rocks Ahead, Logan Derby and Morello. This was the order for the next two rounds and with half a mile to go Logan Derby moved up from the back to be third behind Agile and Sea Gift. Sea Gift shaded Logan Derby and Agile into the straight and 100 yards from the post Logan Derby looked an easy winner, but Southern Smile put in a late challenge and got to within a neck of Logan Derby. ■ Morello was close up third and then came Sea Gift, on a break, Rocks Ahead and Big Author. It was a great run on Logan Derby s part, as he was third last with less than five furlongs to go. He showed great brilliance in running round the field and was first into the straight. Sea Gift buckled a wheel. Morello’s showing was disappointing as he did not threaten danger at any stage. Southern Smile was the only one seriously to threaten the winner at the finish, A NARROW WIN The first three horses in the Spring Handicap passed the winning post almost in line, with Privateer gaining a narrow verdict over Jesse Owens and Jovial. There was a lot of merit in Privateer’s win as he broke up two furlongs from home, but recovered his gait quickly and secured a lucky run on the rails at the finish.. Silver Laddie and Stamboul were slow away and the early leader was Jesse Owens from Stalwart, Jovial, Privateer, Gay Avon. Glenastle and Diversion. Quest moved up down the back straight and with five furlongs to go Jesse Owens led Privateer. Quest, Stalwart, Jovial, Tritoma and Gay Avon. Jesse Owens and Privateer led to the straight, where Privateer broke up. Stalwart, Jovial and Tritoma were the handiest of the others. In the run home Jesse Owens and Jovial appeared to be fighting out the finish when Privateer flashed through on the rails and, although he broke on the post, he won by a neck. Mankind broke in the run home and interfered with Tritoma, who was fourth. Then came Quest, Mankind and Silver Laddie. EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE Fine Art put up an excellent performance to win the Caversham Handicap, for which he was one of the favourites. From a good start Golden Cross led out from Wynan, Fremont, Wee Wrack, Nell Grattan, Harlequin and Morewa. Wynan moved up to second place down the back straight and he and Fremont were in charge with five furlongs to go. Nell Grattan, Golden Cross and Morewa were handily placed at this stage, with Fine Art still at the rear of the field. Fine Art made a forward move entering the back straight, but two furlongs from home was still second last. Wynan and Fremont were first into the straight, being .closely attended by Nell Grattan and Morewa. Nell Grattan had the measure of the leaders half way down, but she was challenged by Fine Art on the outer and he got up to win by a neck. Morewa was half a length away third, ahead of Fremont and Harlequin. Fine Art’s time of 3min 14 4-ssec bettered Iraq’s track record by 1 3-ssec. Fremont did not stay on after having every chance. Nell Grattan was unlucky in meeting one of Fine Art’s class and this was his fourth success on end. UNUSUAL FINISH The finish of the Dominion Handicap was a most unusual one, as Swift Guy appeared to be winning comfortably, with Gyrate in behind him, when D. C. Watts pulled Gyrate out a few yards from the winning post and defeated Swift Guy by a length. Swift Guy, Bosun and Manna’s Son broke up at the start and when the field had settled down Swift Guy was 80 yards behind the leaders. Golden Bingen, Gyrate and Parrish Chimes were in charge for a mile when, they were joined by Swift Guy. Down the back

straight Swift Guy ran up to be second to Golden Bingen at the far turn, where Gyrate was handy and Parrish Chimes was stopping. Swift Guy had the measure of Golden Bingen in the run home and appeared to be winning comfortably when Gyrate made a late run and got up to win by a length. Golden Bingen was a length away third, ahead of Manna’s Son and Parrish Chimes. Swift Guy showed a great turn of speed and had he moved off correctly he would not have been beaten. MORELLO DISAPPOINTING There was an upset in the Dash Handicap, for which Morello was backed down to a short price. The winner turned up in Satin King, who returned a good double figure dividend. Both Frisco Lady and Renown’s Best ruined their chances at the start, while Rocks Ahead was also interfered with. At the end of two furlongs Satin King, Glenrossie and Graham Direct were two lengths clear of Morello, who broke up and dropped right back. With a round to go Satin King, Glenrossie and Graham Direct had the race to themselves, Rocks Ahead being at the head of the others.. Graham Direct, made a forward move at the far turn, but Satin King led into the straight and in a great race home he hung on to beat Glenrossie by a length, with Graham Direct half a length further back. Rocks Ahead was a long way back fourth. Morello was handily placed when he broke up and his form was disappointing. This was Satin King’s first success in three years. He had to be driven right out to beat Glenrossie, who came on again after dropping back at the straight entrance.
