LOGAN DERBY WINS BIG RACE OF THE DAY

(From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN, November 24. A fast track was provided for the opening of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting today and fast times were a feature of the day’s racing. Several very fine performances were put up during the afternoon, one of the best being Fine Art’s success in the Caversham Handicap from the back mark. He was required to break the track record for one mile and a-half to win, and in accomplishing this task he was timed to run a sensational last half-mile in 58sec. Fine Art has now won in his last four starts and today’s performance stamped him as a New Zealand Cup horse in the making. The Australian horse Logan Derby received an ovation after winning the President’s Handicap, the chief event of the day. This, however, was a poor race as there was no pace on until the last half-mile which the winner covered at two-minute speed. Southland stables were not strongly represented today, but the Wyndham gelding Roan Duke won the St. Hilda Handicap in a fast-run' race. He was always near the front and won really well at the finish.

There was a surprise finish to the clay’s racing when the outsider of the Dash Handicap, Satin King, a former Southlander, won in a close finish after the favourite, Morello, had broken up during the running.

The fields were not large, but the events were keenly contested and the totalizator turnover showed a satisfactory increase. The single-pool system of betting was in operation and this method of speculation was most popular. As is usually the case at Forbury there was a large attendance of Southlanders.
