DR SCHUSCHNIGG NERVOUS WRECK

RELEASE BY NAZIS EXPECTED SECRET AGREEMENT WITH HABSBURGS ALLEGED (Received November 23, 6.30 p.m.) » VIENNA, November 22. Dr Kurt Schuschnigg, the former Austrian Chancellor, who is likely to be released without trial, has suffered almost a complete mental breakdown. He walks with the aid of a crutch, is very thin, and spends most of his days sitting motionless and staring into vacancy. His friends think he will be “released to die.”

The Vienna correspondent of The Daily • Telegraph says that the newspaper Die Neueste Nachrichten publishes details of an alleged secret agreement between Dr Schuschnigg and Archduke Otto von Habsburg, Pretender to the Throne of AustriaHungary, as a basis for the immediate trial of Dr Schuschnigg on a charge of high treason. It is alleged that £lOOO a month was sent to Archduke Otto from July 1935 onwards as compensation for the State’s use .of his property. Dr Schuschnigg is alleged to have appointed a secret committee of Ministers in 1937 to deal with the Habsburg property in Austria, all the payments being made to Archduke Otto. Dr Schuschnigg is reported to have said that £lOOO was a trifling amount compared with what had been taken from the Habsburgs.
