RURAL AUTONOMISTS DISAPPOINTED
LITTLE SUPPORT FROM FARMERS IN CANADA OTTAWA, October 26. The Saskatchewan farmers’ move for the secession of the prairie provinces is disappointing its sponsors. Manitoba and Alberta are opposed to the proposal and British Columbia is lethargic. The Premier of Ontario (Mr M. F. Hepburn) says that that province is at breaking point about concessions to the west. The country in general is paying a loss of £6,000,000 through the guaranteed wheat price to benefit the western fanners, and the east is • nying most of The movement is based chiefly on the aT' red farm implement tariff discrimination and the failure of the Government to peg wheat at a dollar instead of 80 cents. Three days ago the Saskatchewan branch of the United Farmers of Canada adopted a resolution appointing a committee to consider seriously the secession of the prairie provinces in favour of “a western autonomous state within the Empire, democratically governed.”
