Smart Sprint Task At Riccarton RIDERS ENGAGED FOR CUP RACE (Special to The Times) CHRISTCHURCH, October 27. There was a light drizzle throughout the early morning period at Riccarton today, but it did not interfere with the work. The outside of the course proper was thrown open and it provided excellent going, but there were no outstanding gallops. The best over six furlongs was credited to Paper Slipper, and over five furlongs to Cocksure, two strong candidates for the Stewards’ Handicap. Counterblast was first out to run half a mile in 50 3-ssec, and Happy Memory and Keen Sight ran six furlongs in Imin 21sec. Paper Slipper, joined by Great Flight at the half-mile, covered six furlongs in Imin 16 4-ssec. Scuffle strode over a mile in Imin 43 2-ssec. Padishah and Cape Gabo kept together throughout seven furlongs in Imin 32 2-ssec. Wine Card reeled off half a. mile in 49 3-ssec, and the two-year-old, Abbey, by Lord Warden from Some Abbey, ran over the same ground in 50sec. Others were: Sparkle, 54sec; Lofty and Asset, 51sec; Lady Middleton and Plumage, 53sec; Wandarobe and Skyrina, 51sec. Queen Linda easily accounted for Spartan over half a mile in 49 2-ssec, and Benevolent and Bera Regis were together in front of West Wind in 50 4-ssec. SMART FIVE Cocksure set the main for five furlongs by running the distance in Imin 2sec, the last three in 39sec. and his stablemate, Miss Bluff, took Imin 5 3Lady Leigh broke away in front of Rebellion and maintained her advantage to the post to record Imin 3 l-ssec, and Rabble beat Improvident in Imin 3 2-ssec. Rex Maitland and Rebel Star ran the same distance in Imin 4 l-ssec. La Plata and Amoretto took Imin ssec, Screamer Imin 5 3-ssec, Nigella and Silver Lark Imin ssec. Master Hotspur apparently did not suffer any ill-effects from his Trentham trip, and he reeled off half a mile comfortably in 49Jsec. ' Argentic and Mungatoon covered a mile in Imin 43 2-ssec. Defaulter was given strong work over the same distance in Imin 52sec. Malagigi, ridden by H. Wiggins, galloped a mile in Imin 44sec, taking 51 4- for the first half. He is a bigframed gelding and appears to take a lot of riding to keep him up to his work. Royal Baby and Royal Pat were allowed to stride over a mile in Imin 50sec, and Lord Hawk easily beat Back Lead in Imin 46sec. Dropped x Catch and Great Bramble had a similar task in Imin 45Jsec. Sovereign Lady and Disdain covered nine furlongs, the last mile taking Imin 43 4-ssec, the last half 52 4-ssec. They were not ridden seriously and finished together. USEFUL WORK Gay Parade was responsible for an attractive gallop over seven furlongs in Imin 30 3-ssec. Glenogil took Imin 35sec for the same journey. Roy Bun and Manetho ran six furlongs in Imin 17sec, and Golden Chest took Imin 17 3-ssec. Dictate finished a length in front of Nightcalm at the end of six furlongs in Imin 17 3-ssec. He is to be ridden by C. T. Wilson on Saturday. Aggravate and Miracle covered the same ground in Imin 19sec.

Romarin, who disappointed at Rangiora, and Maroha galloi>ed five furlongs in Imin 4 l-ssec. On the plough there were only a few gallops. The going was fairly holding. Rousseau finished ahead of Gillie after covering seven furlongs in Imin 34sec, and Kilrobe and Financiere ran five furlongs in Imin 6sec, while Phalanx strode over seven furlongs in Imin 32sec. •

Supreme Court, assisted by Chanteur, was given some education over the pony hurdles. This was his first attempt and he shaped very satisfactorily. A. C. Messervy came on to Riccarton after the Wellington meeting and will remain until after the New Zealand Cup meeting. He was today engaged to ride Tidewaiter in the New Zealand Cup. Messervy rode this gelding to victory in the Avondale Cup, but did not have the mount on him at Trentham.
