A BORSTAL ESCAPEE

To the Editor

Sir,—About two weeks ago, as reported in your columns, a lad from the Borstal was charged with attempt to escape. The Magistrate after hearing evidence gave him an extra year to serve, at the same time pointing out to the youth how serious it was to make such an attempt and giving him cold comfort that if he was a good boy no doubt some remission would be made. Considering that the boy’s action was prompted, no doubt, by a sudden impulse to dash down the street (he had only covered three-quarters of a mile when he was recaptured), the sentence given was enough to take all the heart out of the lad. What were the officials of the Borstal thinking of to bring the case into Court? They should have acted like Nelson and put the telescope to the blind eye.—Yours, etc., J. W. RICE. October 24, 1938.
