BAD TIMES FOR OLDER EXTRAS

A serious problem confronts the Hollywood extras. Interpreting the orders placed by Central Casting during recent months, it is evident that extras over 35 years of age are no longer being used except in isolated cases. A majority of recent films are concerned with personalities in their twenties, and they must be surrounded

by extras of like age. As a result all calls from casting directors to Central specify, “Must be under 35.” There are thousands of people in Hollywood above this limit who depend upon films for a livelihood. Among them are many former stars and featured players who have had to turn to the extra ranks. They are automatically ruled out. Those above the age limit receive calls only for mob scenes, which provide about £l. The £3 calls go to'the youngsters.
