GUSTO’S NOVICE SUCCESS

Gold bank’s Striking Display TROTTING HORSEMEN SUSPENDED Valantua, who won the Spring Handicap, was fancied earlier as a likely New Zealand. Cup candidate, but his form until yesterday had not been up to expectations end his chances at Riccarton next month have been passed over in recent weeks. Valantua. who is a half-brother to a previous Cup winner in Palantua, is again likely to enter calculations following his return to the winning list yesterday as he put up quite a satisfactory trial, being better suited over the mile and a-quarter than the first day. Ballad’s sprint success was something of a surprise, but he finished right up with the placed horses the first day and is apparently back to his best. Bow Street won really well, but one of the most impressive winning performances was that of Foxlove. He took no part in the Waimea Hack Handicap, for which he was a firm favourite. When the barrier was released he jumped backwards and was left standing. Gipsy Fair’s success was rather a surprise, hut it was no fluke as she won from end to end. The two trotting races resulted in keen finishes. Gold Bank, a winner on the first day, conceded upwards of 60yds to the novice field, and won very convincingly. It was one of the best performances put up on the course for some time. Salalon won the improvers’ race, outstaying both Golden Miller and Mulguy. HORSEMEN SUSPENDED An inquiry into the driving of Dewey Bell in the Balfour Trot on the first day was held. The decision of the judicial committee was that R., Townley, jun., driver of Dewey Bell, and C. G. Kirby, driver of Black Thread, be suspended for two weeks for a breach of Rule 344 (1) of the Rules of Trotting. Kirby and Townley are partowners of Dewey Bill and, according to the rule, a person interested in one horse in a race cannot drive another. The gate receipts yesterday showed ' an increase of £5O 16/- in comparison with the same day last year, and the totalizator turnover was £257 10/- in advance of last year’s figures for the same day. The returns for the meeting as compared with last year are as follows: TOTALIZATOR RETURNS

Mr C. Gieseler’s work as starter was again- of a good standard, and if some horses may have been slow to jump out, it was no fault of the official in charge. It was unfortunate that a firm favourite in Foxlove should have taken no part in the race, but he was in good line on the rails when the tapes were released and he jumped right back from them. Before this, Foxlove had been standing well while some of the others were causing trouble. The meeting was again excellently conducted and the programme run off in good time. The results were:—
