BOYS’ BRIGADE MOVEMENT

DOMINION EXECUTIVE MEETS

DELEGATES ENJOY STAY IN INVERCARGILL

Appreciation of the hospitality extended to the delegates from Wellington and South Island centres on their visit to Invercargill was expressed at the meeting of the Dominion executive of The Boys’ Brigade movement yesterday. Several members said that their stay in Invercargill had been most enjoyable. . ... This meeting was the last of the sessions held in Invercargill during the week-end. The annual - conference of the Dominion Council took place on Saturday and church parades and special services were held on Sunday. Yesterday afternoon the delegates were taken for a motor drive to Winton, Otautau and The Rocks. Some of the delegates left for the north last night and the others will leave today. Mr J. H. Boyd presided ovet a good attendance at the meeting of the executive. A discussion took place about the Dominion, camp, which is to be held at Waikanae, 40 miles north of Wellington, during the Centennial Exhibition. Mr R. H. Hill said he thought there was a necessity for a central committee in Wellington to take the responsibility. There would be a big amount of detailed work involved in organizing a camp and there should be a committee in Wellington to meet at short notice. Mr Boyd pointed out that the members of battalions in other centres and the Wellington members would probably have different viewpoints about the camp. ■* Several members differed about the main objective of holding a Dominion camp. “When the proposal was mooted the main objective was to get boys from all parts of the Dominion in camp together for the first time,” said Mr Hill. They did not regard sightseeing as the main purpose of a Dominion camp. It was decided to recommend to the camp committee that the period to be spent in camp and in Wellington, together with travelling time, be not more than 14 days. PRICE OF EQUIPMENT

A motion was put forward that the price of equipment in New Zealand be increased by 10 per cent. “Equipment is a big outlay for companies at the start,” said Mr Boyd. “If we can afford to sell equipment at the present prices we should do so. "Mf it becomes apparent during the year that we cannot meet our obligations the matter can be reconsidered.. However, I am not in favour of an increase.” The motion was altered to except boys’ uniforms from the increase in price and was carried in its amended form. , It was suggested that inter-district competitions be held at the Dominion camp. After discussion it was decided to hold company and squad drill and a tent competition. One of the members advanced a suggestion that the management committee be set up in one centre for two years. ‘ , Mr A. M. Branks moved that the Dunedin members of the executive constitute the management committee for the ensuing year. The motion was seconded, but was lost on a show of hands. The New Zealand Native Bird Protection Society’s album was adopted as the official handbook for the wayfaring course on native birds. Messrs J. K. McDonald, G. H. King and A. Sneddon were, co-opted as members of the executive.

The following committees were appointed: Management committee, Messrs Robert Duncan (chairman), Boyd, A. J. Duncan, P. M. Velvin, R. C. J. Smith, Hill (secretary); Dominion Life Boy committee, Messrs A. Young, Branks, G. H. Adams and Hill. Messrs R. Mardle, P. Taylor, G. King and Miss M. I. Woods were co-opted members of this committee.

Thanks were expressed to Mr Boyd, the past president, for the way in which he had conducted the annual meeting. Thanks was also expressed to Mr and Mrs Boyd for their hospitality. In his reply Mr Boyd said that the feeling throughout the meetings had been remarkably good. Many of the members had expressed different opinions, but no personal feeling had entered into the discussions.
