QUEENSTOWN

LAKE COUNTY MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Lake County Council was held in Queenstown. There were present: Mr L. Lee (chairman) and Crs Cockburn, Knowles, Lewis, Reid, Aubrey and Gordon. . The Main Highways Board advised the council that it had approved of the purchase of a new grader and would obtain quotations and submit them to the council for consideration. The council approved of the Transport Department’s suggestion that any local authority may make it a condition of a licence that the licensee must submit himself again for a . test at. a later date and, in the meantime, while driving he must display L signs on the vehicle. The Department of Lands and Survey advised that the land adjoining Lake Wanaka from Pembroke township to Eely Point was a road reserve under the jurisdiction of the Lake County. The council decided to prohibit camping on the shores. It was decided that Messrs- Lee and Gordon should visit Wellington about the proposed bridging loan. It was agreed that the council should agree to the Dunedin City Council’s request to run buses through Queenstown with excursionists. A. and W. Hamilton, Invercargill, wrote saying that their payment towards the cost of erecting a new bridge over the Routeburn would be forwarded when the job was completed. The council has approved of the work subject to arrangements about finance. Mrs K. Scott, Glenorchy, asked permission to plant trees down one side of the fence on the main road to Rees river and also permission to erect a gate at the Rees river end of the lane. Permission was granted on condition that the necessary advertising received attention.

It was decided not to purchase any small birds’ eggs this year. ( A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr W. H. Overton in the death of his father.

LAWN TENNIS A non-competition lawn tennis match was played between Queenstown and Cromwell, the latter winning by 12 sets and 109 games to four sets and 77 games. Results, with Queenstown names first, were:— Women’s singles.—Mrs Stanton lost to Miss Gordon, 6-7; Miss Mclnnes beat Miss Campbell, 7-1; Mrs Herbert lost to Mrs Robertson, 6-7; Miss Calder lost to Miss Bennetts, 2-7. Men’s singles.—Father Henley lost to D. Jolly, 4-9; W. H. Overton lost to E. Brown, 3-9; R. Robertson lost to J. Stevens, 4-9; T. M. Brookes lost to J. Gordon, 5-9. Women’s doubles.—Mrs Stanton and

Miss Mclnnes beat Misses Gordon and Campbell, 7-2; Mrs Herbert and Miss Calder beat Mrs Robertson and Miss Bennetts, 7-6. Men’s doubles.—Father Henley and W. H. Overton lost to Jolly and Brown, 4-9; Robertson and Brookes lost to Stevens and Gordon, 3-9. Mixed doubles.—Father Henley and Mrs Stabton lost to Miss Gordon and Jolly, 2-7; Overton and Miss Mclnnes lost to Brown and Miss Bennetts, 6-7; Miss Calder and Brookes beat Gordon and Miss Campbell, 7-4. In the evening the Queenstown Tennis Club held a dance at which members of the Cromwell team were guests. There was a very good attendance. The music was played by Mrs Richards and Mr G. Mitchell. Mr R. Robertson was master of ceremonies. SEWERAGE SYSTEM After 10 years of endeavour there is now a prospect of having water borne sewerage in Queenstown. The council’s application to the local Government Loans Board for permission to raise £10,500 for this purpose has been approved by the board. A poll of ratepayers will be taken on November 9 to sanction the raising of the loan. It is the intention of the Mayor and the engineer to meet the ratepayers and discuss the proposal.
