MEMBERS OF LOYAL LODGE SIXTY-NINTH ANNUAL BALL The sixty-ninth annual ball of Loyal Tapanui Lodge members was held m the Town Hall. Harbrow’s dance band (Dunedin) played the music. GIRL GUIDES At the annual meeting of the Tapanui Girl Guides’ Association .the District Commissioner, Mrs Quin, presided. The secretary, Mrs J. C. Cameron, presented the report and balance-sheet. The report of the Guide Company was read by Mrs W. Lischner (acting captain), and that of the Brownie Pack by Miss J. Brooke (acting Tawny Owl). Mrs Quin thanked all for their cooperation during the year. The companies were flourishing, she said, and she expected another successful year. Officers were elected as follows: President, Miss Wylie; vice-presidents, Mesdames G. Edger and J. A. McDonald; secretary, Mrs J. C. Cameron EWE HOGGET COMPETITION Mr W. A. Yardley, of Moa Flat, judged the ewe hogget competition held by the Otago Farms Competition Committee. With him were Mr J. Hulyer, president of the Otago A. ana P. Society Mr R. D. Stewart, secretary, Mr J. Fowler, Mr G. H. Calder, secretary of the Farmers’ Union, and Mr G. M. Love, president of the Kelso A. and P. Association. . , Seven entiles were received in tne dual purpose class fat lamb and wool production. Points were allotted as follows:—Wool, 35; carcass, 35; uniformity, 30. The results of the competition are as follows: J. Burnett (Waikoikoi), wool 34, carcass 34, uniformity 29, total 97,1, James Winter (Edievale), 32, 31,28, 91,. 2; F. Clagin (Moa Flat), 30, 31, 27, 88,3. SPRING SHOW The second spring show held by tile Heriot Women’s Institute in the Henot Public Hall was most successful. The entries in most sections showed an increase on last year, only a shSnt decrease being noticed in the industrial section. The judges were Mr S. K. Hughes (Tapanui), cut flowers, narcissi and vegetables; Miss F. Dale (Tapanui), industrial; Mrs W. Robertson (Tapanui), baking and preserves; Mrs H. J. Hay (Tapanui), decorative, and Mr J. S. mcBean (Tapanui), school work. The narcissi and cut flowers, especially wallflowers, anemones and polyanthus, were up to show quality, and for this time of the year, the vegetables were also good, especially leeks and carrots. In the industrial section supper cloths and organdie tea showers were of special merit, and some very good knitting cardigans, pullovers, and so on, was also shown In the baking section, there were big entries in all classes, and the quality was excellent. A novel exhibit in the decorative section was a model of the Queen Elizabeth made in mauve ana blue primroses. The floating bowls were dainty. The children from Heriot, Kelso and Moa Flat schools sent in some very good exhibits in writing, drawing, wood work, print script, plain and fancy sewing, flowers, buttonholes and sprays, handwork and baking.
