CHAMPIONSHIP OF SOUTH ISLAND

Gun Dog Trials At Bay Road WIN FOR T. PASCOE’S * MAJOR A high standard of work was seen at the South Island gun dog championships at Bay road yesterday. The championships attracted strong entries, including three competitors from Christchurch. Southland breeders and owners of dogs were most prominent. The meeting was conducted by the Southland Gun Dog Club and its management was favourably commented upon by visiting competitors. A total of 20 entries was received in the open championship class which was run in four sections, two over water and two on land. The winner of the aggregate was T. Pasco’s curlycoated retriever, Major, which put up a good performance and scored strongly in most sections. The judge expressed the opinion that the work of this dog was outstanding throughout the day. The winning dog scored a first and a second in the sections. The runners-up were S. Lindsay’s Labrador Lock, which scored a second and two thirds in the sections, and G. W. Dennis’s Labrador Bruce, which was second in one section, but which scored steadily in all sections. The fourth dog was P. Hennessey’s springer spaniel, Sir Three Star, which started well by winning both sections over water, but which was not so successful on land. The weather was favourable throughout the day and the sport was followed with keen interest by a fair attendance of supporters. The championship judge was Mr A.

Fraser and the judge of the puppy and novice classes was Mr G. L. McKenzie. Mr P. Hennessey, president of the club, j was in charge of the meeting and Mr J. R. O’Brien was secretary.
