SOUTHERN SOUTHLAND FEDERATION MEETING OF BRANCH AT BLUFF The Bluff Women’s Institute met iri the Athenaeum Hall. There was a good attendance of members and friends, Mrs Benfell, president, presiding. Sixteen new members were welcomed during the afternoon. Mrs McKinney demonstrated woodpulp flowers. Mrs Muir moving a hearty vote of thanks. Competitions resulted as follows: — Best bloom: Mrs W. Williamson. Marmalade: Mrs Benfell. The hostesses were Mesdames Muir, Harris and W. Williamson. LONG BUSH At the monthly meeting of the Long Bush Women’s Institute Mrs Browning presided.' The motto: “Be not simply good; be good for something.” The roll call was “My Best Bargain.” Competitions resulted: Madeira cake: Miss O. Hughes 1, Mrs Mclntyre 2, Mrs Browning 3. Daffodils (three varieties): Miss O. Hughes 1, Mrs Foley and Miss Evans 2 eq, Mrs N. Hughes and Mrs Timpany 3 eq. Miss Hughes and Miss O. Brown were appointed delegates to the council meeting. A parcel of goods from the Disabled Returned Soldiers was received for sale among members. It was decided to support the leper appeal, and a parcel of gifts is being forwarded. A sale of mystery parcels was held to raise funds. . , Mrs Mulvey gave a demonstration ot hay box cookery. An invitation to the Tisbury birthday party was accepted. Hostesses for the afternoon were Miss M. Evans and helpers. LIMEHILLS At the monthly meeting of the Limehills Women’s Institute Mrs Walker presided. The motto for the month was “A wise man, like the moon, shows only his bright side.” The roll call was: “Gardening Hints. For the Golden Thread, Miss Lepper gave a paper on Florence Nightingale. Mrs Nicoll for the monthly gardening talk spoke on the planting of seeds in seed boxes. Articles from disabled soldiers were on sale. Results of monthly competitions were: Best bloom: Miss S. Lepper 1, Mrs Coster 2, Mrs Nicoll 3. Article from previous demonstration: Mrs E. J. Crowe 1, Miss S. Lepper 2, Mrs Nicoll 3. Bottle preserved pears: Miss S. Lepper 1, Mrs W. Woods 2, Mrs E. J. Crowe 3. ' NIAGARA There was an average attendance at the monthly meeting of the Niagara Women’s Institute. Mrs Ramsay presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with the McLean family. The roll-call was “My Most Exciting Experience.” The demonstration on cane trays given by Mrs Ramsay was followed with keen interest. The competition for the evening was: “Best darn on flannel” and was won by Miss Sarah Biggar. Mrs Earle Kennedy was in charge of the social competition, which was won by Mrs G. E. George. Arrangements were made for the forthcoming flower show. Mrs George and Miss S. Biggar were elected to attend the half-yearly council meeting in Invercargill on November 2. Hostess for the evening was Mrs George. The motto was: “Don’t let the grass grow on the road to friendship.” WOODEND The monthly meeting of the Woodend Women’s Institute was well attended. Mrs Shepherd presided. The motto was: “A garden is not made by saying, oh, how beautiful, and sitting in the shade.” The roll call was “Suggestions for the Christmas entertainment.” It was decided that each member bring a woollen garment to the next meeting, the garments later to be sent to the Chinese Relief Fund. Competitions for the month resulted as follows:—Child’s soft toy: Mrs Jennings (Donald Duck) 1, Mrs Preston (rabbit) 2, Mrs Saunders (dog) 3. Blooms: Mrs Shepherd 1, Mrs Jennings 2, Mesdames Harvey and Preston 3 eq. The hostesses were Mesdames Keown and McCallum. SPAR BUSH The meeting of the Spar Bush Women’s Institute was opened with “Comrades and Friends” and members attending numbered 26. The roll call was “Articles necessary in every household.” Competitions resulted: Six pikelets: Miss M. Dalrymple 1, Mrs Fletcher 2, Mrs Clive 3. Six best graded eggs: Miss E. Clive 1, Mrs Drain 2, Miss F. Donald 3. A travel talk was given by Mrs Donough. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J. Donald and Johnstone. TISBURY At the monthly meeting of the Tisbury Women’s Institute Mrs Gellately presided over a fair attendance of members. ■' The motto for the month was: Be In Time,” and the roll call, “Something We Treasure.” Competitions resulted. —Coconut ice: Miss McCann 1, Mrs McCann 2, Mrs Penny 3. Best bloom: Mrs Penny 1, Mrs McCann 2. During the month a gift was made to Mrs Jack as a token of appreciation of her services as president. The hostesses were Mesdames McDermott and Gellately. KENNINGTON There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of- the’ Kennington Women’s Institute. Mrs S. J. Henderson presided. Two new members were welcomed. The motto was: “Rise on stepping stones to better things,” and the roll call: “A Farmyard Noise.” Mrs Patterson moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Randle, of Invercargill, for a talk on the growing of tomatoes and sweet peas, and the making of wreaths. Mesdames E. Riddle and A. Henderson were appointed delegates to the council meeting. Competitions resulted: Four pieces of shortbread: Mrs J. Alexander 1, Mrs Wyeth 2, Miss I. Henderson 3... Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Sampson, E. Riddle and Patterson. WAIANIWA At the monthly meeting of the Waianiwa Women’s Institute Mrs Fraser presided over a good attendance. One new member was enrolled.

The motto was: “A little help kindly done is worth a deal of pity,” and the roll call “Useful hints.”

Mrs Grieve read a paper on Paderewski, the famous pianist, for the Golden Thread. An invitation to the Nightcaps birthday party was received. Competitions resulted:—Kisses: Mrs G. Lindsay 1, Mrs R. McNeill 2, Miss E. Steans 3. Best article from one

Members were entertained by play reading, those taking part being Mesdames Fraser, Young, Parr and Lindsay and Miss M. Young. WAIRIO At the meeting of the Wairio Women’s Institute Mrs Soper presided over a poor attendance of members. An invitation was received to the Nightcaps birthday party. The motto was, “We who have light must make our light brighter,” and the roll call, “Donation or gift suitable for the leper fund.” Competitions resulted: Baking date loaf: Miss Keen 1, Mrs Cutt 2. Best daffodil: Mrs Hunt 1, Miss Keen 2, Mrs Cutt 3. Handworked ovencloth: Mrs Cutt 1, Miss Keen 2. A game “feeling bags” was won by Mrs Valli.

The Ohai Women’s institute celebrated its seventh birthday with a “women-only” social. were present from Nightcaps, Wairio, Spar Bush and Waianiwa Women’s Institutes and the Nightcaps branch of the Women’s Division bf the Farmers’ Union. The evening was spent in games and dancing, interspersed by solos by Mesdames Cutt (Wairio), McLeod (Nightcaps), Gardner (Ohai), tap dancing by Miss Mclntosh (Ohai) and a play by the Ohai Women’s Institute. A lucky ring waltz was won by. Mrs Mair and Miss E. McKay. A beautiful birthday cake, the gift of Mrs J. W. Martin, Riverton, was cut and handed round. Mrs Smeaton, sen. lit the candles, Mrs Graham extinguished them and Mrs Martin cut the first slice. Other slices were cut by each of the visiting institutes who wished Ohai many happy returns.
