SPORTS GALA AT RUGBY PARK

SOUTHLAND FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION TOURNAMENT HELD TO RAISE FUNDS An Association football five-a-side tournament, flat races and dancing competitions were held at Rugby Park on Saturday by the Southland Football Association to assist its funds. Although 10 teams entered for the football tournament only five competed. However, the competition was keen and some interesting games were seen. These tournaments demand strong staying powers on the part of the players and considering that the season is now over they lasted well. There were many pieces of bright play and some good individual efforts. Thistle A was successful and thoroughly deserved its win. This team had easy wins over Old Boys and Old Buffers.

The following are the results: First round. —Thistle A (4) beat Old Boys A (1). Second round.—Thistle B (3) beat Old Boys B (1). Semi-final.—Old Buffers (1) beat Thistle B (0). Final.—Thistle A (4) beat Old Buffers (0). ' , • The dancing and running attracted excellent entries. It was also intended to stage some wrestling bouts, but there were not sufficient competitors.
