SMALL FIELD IN LAST WEEK’S ROAD RACE

By ’

TYRE

A comparatively small field faced the starter in the Bluff race, 13 riders comprising the field. Weather conditions were good, a following wind helping the riders practically all the way. The front markers made the most of their good handicaps and finished two minutes ahead of the next bunch. The race was for a challenge cup presented by Mr Martin of Bluff. N. Hazelmore had his second success for the season, having won the massed start Dacre and return, race. A first year rider, Hazelmore is the right type for a cyclist and shows promise of developing into a good performer. ■ M. Burgess was again in a place. He has been riding very consistently this year having filled several minor placings. A win for Burgess would be well deserved and would not be begrudged by the other riders. R. MacDougall continued to ride up to his form of the previous week. He rode off three-quarters of a minute, was caught by Drury (scr) and teamed with him to .the finish, eventually beating Drury by two lengths in the sprint. It looks as if MacDougall will be riding from scratch very shortly. Arthur Drury continued. his winning form by again recording fastest time. Allowing for the shortening of the road Drury’s effort was a grand one. His time was 42min 44 4-ssec. Riders wishing to compete at the Otautau sports are advised that Rugby Park will be open for training on SunToday’s race is to Drummond, the trophy being donated by Mr Rook of Drummond.
