WAIPOUNAMU AND DUNSDALE MEETING OF SOUTHLAND COUNCIL Reporting to the Southland County Council yesterday on bridge construction work the engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) stated that work had begun on the repairs to the Waipounamu bridge at the beginning of the month, the job being completed on September 14. Constructional work on the Dunsdale stream bridge had been completed and work on the approaches was now being carried out. The town clerk (Mr W. F. Sturman) advised that the Invercargill City Council had agreed to contribute the sum of £lO to the newly constituted Forest Hill Scenic Board. The engineer reported that the only satisfactory method of dealing with the dust nuisance at the Oreti Rest Hotel would be to prime and seal an area extending five chains along each leg of the highways from the intersection, the hotel being situated at the intersection of the Oreti-Drummond highway and the Winton-Ohai highway. He estimated the area would be 2630 square yards of priming and sealing, at a cost of at least 2/- a square yard. The total

cost of the job would be £3OO. This type of work carried a subsidy of £3 for £l. It was decided to advise that there was no provision this year on the cst-imnijCSt The Riversdale Welfare League forwarded a request that the bend in the road on the Waipounamu hill be made safer and suggesting that the formation and gravelling of Eric Miller’s road be gone ahead with. It was decided to reply that the first request was under consideration and that there were no funds available for the other road. A motorist drew the council’s attention to the danger of cattle wandering on the highway in the Waikawa district where the road was steep and bends were numerous. It was decided to refer the matter to the Police Department.

The engineer made the following recommendations:—That re-forming work be done on the road from C H. Hankey’s property to the main highway and that an application be made for £l5O £1 for £1 to be placed on next year’s estimates to do portion of the road.

It was decided that no action be taken in reply to G. D. Wilson’s letter drawing the council’s attention to the bed of the Okapua stream where willows are blocking the flow of flood water, but that Mr Wilson be advised that action will be taken when the dredging proposals are known. The engineer reported also that it had been decided to improve some of the corners on the Pukerau-Kaiwera highway with the use of subsidized labour.
