PILOT TUNNEL UNDER THE THAMES
(Received October 7, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, October 6. The pilot boring of the Dartford to Purfleet tunnel under the Thames, which will join the counties of Essex and Kent, was completed yesterday, when the last five-foot curtain of chalk was broken. There was an error of only three-eighths of an inch in the line and three-sixteenths of an inch in the level of the tunnel when the two borings from the Essex and Kent sides met. The total length of the pilot tunnel is 2832 ft.
