CALTAUX BEATS DOWNES „ (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 12. A return professional boxing contest betweeii Vic Caltaux, of Auckland, and Barney Downes, of Wellington, was fought at the Town Hall at catchweight and was won by Caltaux on points. The Aucklander conceded nearly half a stone in weight, scaling lOst 61b against lOst 12Jlb. x The contest could not be described as brilliant. It was noteworthy for the remarkable display of stamina given by the winner. Caltaux was knocked down for a count of nine in the sixth round and again in the eleventh, but he fought the southerner off in the gamest possible manner. RAYNER AND FRANKLIN DRAW (United Press Association) NAPIER, September 12. In a professional boxing contest on Saturday night, the first for five years, Clarrie Rayner and Joe Franklin fought a draw in a 12-round contest after a solid, though unattractive, display. In a second contest Don Johnson (Auckland) beat Jack Davis (Hastings) on points. The bout provided thrilling boxing, the winner’s more scientific display giving him the verdict.
