QUIST’S FOOT-FAULTS NOT CHECKED
FOREST HILLS, September 8. Results in the American singles ■championships are:— A. K. Quist (Australia) beat Frank Broida, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. H. Surface beat J. Brugnon (France) 6-1, 6-1, 6-2. McNeill beat J. Destremeau (France), 6- 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Mervyn Weston beat Mangin, 6-1, 6-4, 7- 5-7, 8-6. Women’s Singles.—Miss N. Wynne (Australia) beat Mrs Freisenbruch by default; Mrs H. O. Hopman (Australia) beat Miss Patricia Danning 6-0, 6-0. Foot-faulting continues to be a very lively topic of discussion. A film of Quist’s play was taken for half an hour in an effort to determine exactly how he foot-faults. Four foot-faults were called against Broida and none against Quist in their match today. The Australians’ manager (Mr H. O. Hopman) told the Australian Associated Press that there was no intention of doing anything about Quist’s foot-fault-ing this year, but he would definitely be coached next year to avoid it. Quist in an interview with the Australian Associated Press said the meaninglessness of the rule was clearly demonstrated today. “What purpose was served by calling foot-faults against Broida, while I know that I was constantly foot-faulting during the match and no fault was called against me, principally I suppose in an effort to avoid more unpleasantness,” said Quist “I cannot change my method of serving in two minutes and it is hopeless to try to do anything until 1939.” • •
Hopman, J. Bromwich and L. Schwartz drew first-round byes.
