MEN’S HOCKEY

CANTERBURY BEATS EASTERN FAST MATCH AT GORE The touring Canterbury men’s hockey team beat Eastern-Northern in a fast match at the hostel grounds, Gore, yesterday afternoon by two goals to one. The ground was in good condition and the weather was ideal for hockey. Although Eastern was without the services of four of its regular players it gave a good display, especially in the final stages of the game. The side was also unfortunate in losing O. Dey in the second half, when he was forced to retire because of an arm injury. Canterbury opened at a fast pace and scored two goals within 10 minutes of the beginning of play. The visiting team was definitely superior up to this stage, but Eastern soon settled down and the exchanges were much more even for the remainder of the game. Canterbury combined slightly better than Eastern, with, the result .that few players stood out. Fullan and Hickey were always sound, and Gallop, the goal-keeper, gave a very good display. The stars of the Eastern forward line were Dey and Adair, both of whom played dashing hockey. White was pro - minent in the half-back line and although the full-backs, Wright and Ferris, had a considerable amount of work to do they made few mistakes. Porter, the goal-keeper, also played a sound game. The teams were:—

CANTERBURY.—A. Gallop; G. Wootton, R. Hetrick; D. Diebert, L. Cox, R. Devin; A. Pullan, H. Hickey, A. Clapshaw, R. Crocker, S. Campbell. EASTERN-NORTHERN.—J. Porter; P. Wright, E. Ferris; L. Poppelwell, D. White, C. Crawford; C. Tayles, O. Dey, M. Adair, J. Weller and C. Hurley. The home side received a penalty hit early in the game and this placed it in an attacking position. Eastern gained two comers in quick succession, but off-side play by its forwards enabled Canterbury to clear on both occasions. Pullan and Hickey placed their side on the attack when they broke away up the right side-line, taking play to Eastern’s circle. Pullan was last to receive, but his shot at goal went wide. Canterbury returned to the attack following the ensuing 25 bully and rushed to the circle, where Crocker secured. He sent in a fast shot and opened his team’s score, the ball finding the comer of the net. Canterbury 1; Eastern-Northern 0. Eastern took a turn on attack, but the movement was held up by Pullan and from a throw-in Hickey and Clapshaw broke away up the right flank. They raced to Eastern’s circle in a good movement and Clapshaw, who was last to receive, shot a good goal. Canterbury 2; Eastern-Northern 0. Tayles put in some good work for the home side and reached Canterbury s circle. He sent the ball on to Dey, who went in to shoot, but before he could get his stick to the ball Gallop rushed out and made a good save, using his feet well. A period of fast play followed, the ball being taken from one end of the field to the other in fast movements. Neither side gained much advantage until the Canterbury forwards found the Eastern defence out of position. Eastern was forced to defend strenuously for a period, but White eventually secured to clear. Hurley secured and raced away up the side line, centring to the circle. Dey and Adair, who had been backing up, each had a shot at goal which missed narrowly. Eastern had another chance soon after, but off-side play again enabled Canterbury to clear. The scores at half-time were:— Canterbury 2; Eastern-Northern 0 ' After the interval Pullan and Hickey were prominent in a Canterbury attack, but off-side play this time gave Eastern relief. The home forwards then swept upfield in a movement which soon had the visitors in difficulties. Eastern gained-two comers, but the Canterbury backs, who were playing good hockey, cleared to neutral territory. Eastern again attacked, however, and from a scramble in Canterbury’s circle Dey goaled. Canterbury 2; Eastern-North-ern 1. ’ , , The visitors soon retaliated and Eastern had to defend strenuously for a period. , A penalty to Eastern made an opening for Dey, who collected and raced away to Canterbury’s circle. His shot at goal was diverted by Hetrick, however, and the latter cleared. Play was held up for a period while Dey received attention to an injury to his arm, which he suffered when he fell. Eventually he had to leave the field. The visitors returned to the attack, but met solid defence from the Eastern backs. Adair and Weller were prominent in an Eastern attack and Gallop was called on to make clearances several times. Although playing with only four forwards, Eastern was now combining very well and before the end of the game Canterbury had some anxious moments. The home side was not successful in finding the net, however, and the game ended with the scores: Canterbury 2; Eastern-Northern 1 Messrs A. Iggo and A. C. Taylor were the umpires.
