YOUNG HORSES IN WORK

Two-Year-Olds At Invercargill w. E. HAZLETT’S STRONG TEAM Although only a few horses have been kept in commission for racing at coming winter fixtures, Invercargill trainers are busy handling several rising two and three-year-olds. About 15 youngsters are in regular work at the Invercargill tracks at present. Their assignments are not of a serious nature and they are being lightly exercised and sprinted down the straight. This year s newcomers are a particularly well-bred lot, and without exception are in excellent condition. Several of the youngsters are engaged in the coming season’s classics, but whether they will carry out these engagements will depend on their progress in the meantime. R. E. McLellan has a rising two-year-old gelding by Irish Lancer from Linwood. He is more forward than the majority’of his age and he has shaped well in what has been asked of him. This youngster is one of the first' of the crop of Irish Lancer, who stood for a couple of seasons at the Otautau Stud. Irish Lancer is an English-bred horse by Allenby, by Bayardo. Linwood, the dam of the two-year-old, is an unraced sister to Enwood and a half-sister to Crubenmore and Corban. Linwood was got by Woodend from the imported mare Sabor, by Fowlingpiece.

W. E. HAZLETT’S TEAM The youngsters in W. E. Hazlett’s team represent a well-bred and wellgrown lot, practically all being bred at the Chelandry Stud. They are as follows:— Rising four-year-old filly by Colonel Cygnus from Bridget. Rising three-year-old gelding by Colonel Cygnus from Illume. Rising two-year-old filly by Colonel Cygnus from Stronglight. Rising three-year-old gelding by Colonel Cygnus from Lorette. Rising two-year-old filly by Irish Lancer from Glentruin’s Daughter. Rising two-year-old gelding by Gustavo from Tractora. Rising two-year-old filly by Colonel Cygnus from Flicker. More than ordinary interest is always shown in the annual draft from the Chelandry Stud, as some of the bestbred mares in the country are located at the stud and the stock of the imported horse, Colonel Cygnus, who was represented by his first winners in Sparkle and Astral Flash during pie closing term, are expected to furnish into good winners. The filly from Bridget has previously been worked, but. has been given plenty of time. She is of good size and earlier in the season she was schooled and displayed some ability as a jumper. Bridget . was a Paper Money mare from the imported mare Sprig of Erin, whose list included Wild Colleen, Irish, Father O’Flynn and others. The gelding from Illume ranks as a half-brother to Flash, Flicker, Chief Light and Eliminate, their dam being by Kilbroney from Simper (imp.). The youngster from Stronglight is a wellmade filly. Stronglight was by Tractor from Dazzling Light, who left Lambent (the dam of Sparkle), Dazzling Raid and others. Dazzling Light is another daughter of Simper, and like Illume is by Kilbroney. The rising three-year-old gelding from Lorette is particularly well grown for his age, and gave an exceedingly fine display of jumping when schooled earlier in the week. The Irish Lancer filly from Glentruin’s Daughter is a half-sister to Baitruin. A chestnut, she is a neat filly, well coupled and shows a lot of quality. Glentruin’s Daughter is an unraced sister to Lochlaggen and Ardchoille, being by Woodend from the imported mare Glentruin, a great race mare. T. E. PANKHURST’S HORSES T. E. Pankhurst is working five youngsters at present, including the following:— Rising two-year-old colt by Paper Money from Royal Silk. Rising two-year-old. filly by Nigger Minstrel from a Paladin mare. Rising two-year-old filly by Pink Coat from Tray Bond. Rising three-year-old filly by Night Raid from Aspiring. The Night Raid-Aspiring filly has been in work for some weeks and is fairly forward. She has shaped well in sprinting tasks with others of her age. Aspiring was by Some Boy II from a great race mare in Silver Peak, the dam of a recent winner in Triple Cone. The Paper Money colt and the Nigger Minstrel filly were brought to the tracks for the first time during the week.. The pair is in great condition and is particularly well grown. Royal Silk, the dam of the Paper Money colt, is by Sunny Lake from Silk Lace (the dam of Claret Cup and Silken Tabard), by Solferino. The Pink Coat-Tray Bond filly is a good type and ranks as a sister to Pink Bond, a winner this season as a two-year-old. Tray Bond is a Tea Tray mare from Victory Bond, by Paper Money from Kilberry, by Kilbroney. Kilberry produced a number of good winners, including Tommy Dodd, Countersign and The Graphic. J. A. Rowland has kept the two-year-old filly Blissful Lady (Paper MoneyLady Blissful) going, while a recent addition to his team is a rising three-year-old gelding by Nigger Minstrel from Fairy Dart. Blissful Lady, who has been entered for the Dunedin classics, is a very sober headed youngster and is one likely to come to hand very quickly. Her dam Lady Blissful, who was by Elysian from Lady Wayward 11, also produced Baby Bliss, Overlooked and Johnny. The Nigger Minstrel gelding is a thick set youngster and is carrying a lot of condition at present. His dam, Fairy Dart, was by Last Dart from Fairy Ring, by Elysian. The rising two-year-old filly by Iliad from Set Sail, and ranking as a halfsister to Sailing Lady and Sea Lady, has been sent to A. McKay at Riverton. The Iliad youngster was handled at Invercargill and proved a very even tempered yearling. She has been engaged in the classics of the coming season, and if breeding counts for anything she should make a name for herself early. HUNT MEETING AT INVERCARGILL PROGRAMME DRAWN UP FOR JULY 2 At a largely-attended meeting of the recently-formed Invercargill branch of the Birchwood Hunt last evening a programme was drawn up for a hunt to be held at Lorneville, near the aerodrome, on July 2. It was decided to include a farmers’ steeplechase, an open steeplechase, a short sprint race and maiden and open jumping competitions. Several trophies have been secured for the various competitions. It was also decided that the huntsman, the master, the whip and the hounds should assemble in front of the Invercargill Post Office on July 2 and proceed to the grounds at Lorneville.
