SPY HUNT SPREADS TO CANADA

MR BENNETT’S WARNING RECALLED OTTAWA, June 24. The investigation into the spy ring in the United States has spread to Canada. The Dominion Minister of Defence (Mr lan Mackenzie) announced that one of the suspects indicted at Washington had been visiting Montreal. The announcement recalls an allegation in the Canadian House of Commons by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr R. B. Bennett) that a German, Dr Egerhard, was secretly organizing Nazi groups among the German minority in Canada.

In a debate on defence on May 26 Mr Bennett gave a warning that agents of Herr Hitler were working among Canadian minority groups, emphasizing their alleged rights. He cited Czechoslovakia, where the German minority demanded homeland military action to compel the Czechs to give them what they wanted. No language was too strong to describe the difficulty of the European situation, he said. On June 9 the Secretary of State (Mr Thibaudeau Rlnfret) announced that as the culmination of Mr Bennett’s charges the Government was investigating the naturalization status of Dr Egarhard, of Montreal. Dr Egarhard is described as the Canadian Fuhrer. Under the guise of social clubs, Nazis in various centres are alleged to be organizing by direct orders from Berlin, and are reported to be supplying the names of Canadian Germans who refuse to join.
