ACCIDENT ATTRIBUTED TO SPEED

ENGINEER’S STATEMENT IN RATANA INQUIRY

(United Press Association)

WELLINGTON, June 20.

Technical evidence given earlier in the inquiry by A. S. Wansbrough, designing engineer in the maintenance branch of the New Zealand Railways, was the subject of much crossexamination this afternoon when the Board of Inquiry set up to investigate the cause of the Ratana railway disaster on March 26 resumed its sitting. In answer to Mr G. G. Watson, counsel for the driver, Wansbrough, said he was satisfied from what he had seen that the locomotive did not mount the rails, but overturned at a speed of approximately 50 miles an hour. The cross-examination of Wansbrough had not been completed when the inquiry adjourned at 5 p.m. It will be resumed at 10.30 a.m. tomorrow. Other departmental experts will also be cross-examined on evidence given during the earlier stages of the inquiry.
