MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY

PROPOSED SOUTHLAND MEMORIAL DONATION OVER TERM OF SEVEN YEARS URGED “We cannot face this grant as well as that for the court at the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition,” said Mr C. B. Tapley at a meeting of the Bluff Harbour Board when an application for a grant towards establishing a centennial memorial for Southland in the form, of a museum and art gallery, was being considered. On the motion of Mr Tapley, it was decided to inquire whether a donation could be spread over a term of seven years. It was stated during file discussion that between £15,000 and £20,000 was required for the proposed memorial. The Horx T. F. Doyle suggested that the present courthouse would, if remodelled, made a good building in which to house the Museum and art gallery. Mr Tapley stated that a quarter-acre section at the comer of Deveron and Tay streets had tentatively been’set aside as a site for such a project. This had been done when he was a member of the City Council.
