GORE GRANT TO LEAGUE

Same Amount As Last Year

AMENDMENT HURRIEDLY WITHDRAWN A letter from the Southland Progress League asking for a contribution from the Gore Borough Council was only partly read at last night’s meeting of the council. Cr T. Sim moved that the council contribute the same amount as it did last year. The motion was seconded by Cr W> K. Hamilton.

There was some doubt about the amount that had been contributed last year, the Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) saying that he thought it was £2O, Cr J. C. Ray: I move that we grant only £l5. I don’t see why we should throw away borough funds. Our rates are up and our expenses are greater. We should put the money to a better cause.

Cr R. S. Green seconded the amendment. “I have always held that we don’t get value for this money,” he added. There was another brief discussion on the amount that was contributed last year, and it was suggested that last year’s minutes should be referred to. The town clerk (Mr J. Taylor): Perhaps this will throw some light on it.

Mr Taylor then read an extract from the league’s letter, which read: “In recent' years your council’s contribution has been £lO, though if you can see your way. to increase this . . .” The silence that followed was broken by Cr Ray. “Well, I am withdrawing my amendment quick and lively,” he said.

The Mayor said that it was to their interests to support the league, which did a great deal of valuable work for Southland and which had the interests not only of Invercargill but of the whole province at heart. Cr J. A. Baldey endorsed the Mayor’s remarks and moved an amendment that the contribution be £l5.

Cr R. L. Reid seconded the amendment, which was lost by four votes to seven.

The motion was carried.
