THREAT CONTAINED IN LETTER

ELDERLY MAN CHARGED (United Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, May 2. In the Supreme Court, Arthur Ernest Smith, aged 65, a carpenter of Foxton, who admitted sending a letter containing a threat to do bodily harm to William Trueman, town clerk at Foxton, appeared before Mr Justice Blair for sentence. His Honour said he did not want to interfere with Smith’s chances of getting a pension by entering a conviction and did not want to admit him to probation because it cost him something, so he proposed merely to order him to come up for sentence within 12 months if called on. Counsel stated that the trouble between Smith and the Foxtor. Borough Council had culminated in the sending of the offending letter.
