FEWER MEN ARE UNEMPLOYED
COMPARISON WITH LAST YEAR REGISTRATIONS FOR MONTH OF APRIL (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 2. The unemployment return for April 9, 1938, issued by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) tonight, including those on register who for health or other reasons are unfit for employment, discloses a reduction of 12,738, against the corresponding figure for April 10, 1937. Compared with the position for the past month, however, there is an increase of 520, brought about by the falling off of seasonal employment. This small increase, in registrations has been revealed in past returns and is to be expected during the winter months of the year. Details, as at April 9, 1938:— Registered, but not on relief—ll3s. On sustenance and awaiting placement —3281. ’ On Scheme No. 5 relief.—2799. Total—72ls.
On sustenance, totally unfit for employment for health or other reasons, but being afforded relief from the Em-ployment-Promotion Fund.—Booo. For the four-weekly period under review, the expenditure from the fund under the heading of promotion of employment, as distinct from relief expenditure, is estimated at £231,950.
