Copland, of Timaru, is the guest of Miss Eileen O’Byrne, Dalrymple street. Miss Hilda Davies returns to Dunedin today after being the guest of Mrs A. O. Davies, Thames street. Miss Vera Gordon has returned to Oreti from a holiday at The Rocks, Riverton. Mr and Mrs R. Donaldson, Oteramika road, leave on Monday by the Maunganui for a tour of Australia. Miss Bettine Hogg, Wellington, who has been the guest of Miss Elizabeth Hoyles, Herbert street, leaves tomorrow on her return to the north. Mrs N. L. Watson, Wellesley avenue, was hostess at tennis yesterday in honour of Miss Egidia Menzies, of Wellington. Mrs Donaldson, Tweed street, and her 'daughter, Evelyn, have left for Auckland, where they will attend the Roman Catholic centenary celebrations. Mr and Mrs F. G. Hall-Jones, Lennel, return to Invercargill tomorrow after attending the conference of the fifty-third district of Rotary in Christchurch. Miss Beth Thomson, Dalrymple street, leaves today for Wellington. She sails from there on Tuesday by the Awatea for Sydney, where she joins the Orontes for an extended holiday in England. The Misses Sheila and Lorna Reid, Tweed street, were hostess at a gift evening during the week for Miss Beth Thomson, Dalrymple street, before her departure for England. Mr and Mrs T. Menzies Watson, Morven, Ohai, leave tomorrow for Dunedin, where they will meet Mrs W. Squires, of Nelson, who arrives by plane on Monday, and who will be Mrs Watson’s guest. On Wednesday evening the Southland branch of the Registered Nurses’ Association met in the Tudor Lounge to welcome Miss Lambie, Registrar and Director of Nursing in New Zealand. Miss Lambie, who has recently toured England, the United

States and some of the European countries making observations on hospital conditions and nursing education, and who was a delegate from New Zealand to the International Council of Nurses held in London last year, gave an interesting account of her tour from tourist and professional aspects. Before her departure for Christchurch, where she has been appointed producer for the Canterbury Repertory Society, Miss Nancy Nicholson was met by the members of the committee of the Invercargill Repertory Society and their wives in the Tudor Lounge. In presenting Miss Nicholson with a cheque and a propelling pencil and fountain pen, the president, Mr Denniston Cuthbertson, said that she would be greatly missed from the society where her work had been of outstanding value. He wished her success and happiness in her new position. Mr B. W. Hewat, vice-president, also spoke, and Miss Nicholson replied. Mrs T. A. Nicholson was also present.

The engagement is announced of Kathleen Elizabeth (Betty), th * daughter of Mr and Mrs W. A. Edwards, Wellington street, to Keith Trevor Stokes, of Mount Somers Station, North Auckland, only son of Mr and Mrs A. L. Stokes, Auckland. Yesterday afternoon a number of members of the Southland Womens Club and of the Garden Circle of the club visited the president, Mrs Ritchie Crawford, at her home at Otatara. They were taken through the bush garden by Mrs Crawford, and bright flowers in a setting of native bush were greatly admired. Tea was served on the lawns and veranda, and on behalf of those present, Mrs G. H. Uttley, in the absence of the chairman of the circle, Mrs J. G. Macdonald, thanked Mrs Crawford for her hospitality and for the opportunity of seeing her garden. An event of interest to the women of Invercargill will take place next Saturday, when the committee of the Invercargill branch of the Plunket Society will hold a garden party in the beautiful grounds of the KaritaneHunt hospital, Waikiwi. It is now two years since a similar function was held as last year it was postponed on account of the infantile paralysis epidemic. An entertainment will be provided, also putting and other competitions. There will be pony rides and a treasure hunt for the children. Afternoon tea and ice creams will be obtainable, also stalls with produce, flowers, etc., for sale at reasonable pricesThe committee is taking a great deai of trouble to provide a really enjoyable afternoon, and asks all friends of the society to take the opportunity to visit the hospital.
