MANUKA AND SCRUB ON FIRE

BLAZE AT GORGE ROAD Manuka and scrub fires at Gorge Road caused some anxiety on Thursday, but the wind remained in a favourable quarter and the danger passed. In one house linen, silver-ware and other household articles were packed ready for a hurried departure in the event of the flames spreading across the road, but the wind did not change and anxiety was allayed. The fires broke out on Crown property between Gorge Road and Awarua, scrub and peat burning for several days. By Thursday night the position was becoming serious and several settlers were out till 2 yesterday morning keeping a watch on the spread of the flames. There was a big blaze in the old workings of the pine company’s mill, but fit did not spread far.

Rain late yesterday afternoon kept the fires down, the district being covered by dense smoke.
