WOMEN’S DIVISION
SOUTH HILLEND BRANCH To celebrate its fifth birthday the South Hillend branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a social afternoon. There was a big attendance of members and the following branches of the division and Women’s Institute were represented: Otautau, Nightcaps, Winton, Drummond and Dipton and the Nightcaps, Wairio and Limehills Institutes. The president, Mrs C. Wilson, presented the birthday cake and the two senior members, Mrs A. McCarthy and Mrs J. Langford, were called on to light and extinguish the candles. Mrs T. S. Smith (Winton), who with Mrs W. H. King formed the branch, then cut the cake and outlined the work of the division. Regret was expressed that Mrs King was unable to be present. The following programme was presented:—Orchestral selection, Misses Hazlett (3), C. Muir, J. Cunningham and M. Kelly; vocal duet, Mesdames W. Langford and A. Dykes; sword dance, Miss D. Kirkwood; song, Mrs James Kean; pianoforte solo, Miss. A. Langford; tap dance, Miss M. Hamilton; cello solo, Miss Kelly; song, Mrs W. Langford (with cello obbligato by Miss Kelly); one-act play, “Bobbie Settles Down,” Misses G. Taylor, J. Langford. C. Muir and M. Boyle. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Dykes and Misses A. Langford and N. Crowe. The lucky number competition was won by Mrs O’Malley and Mrs Stenhouse (Winton). A dance was held in the evening, the music being played by Mrs Dykes and Mr Bailey. Mr F. Langford was master of ceremonies. A guessing competition was won by Mr J. Plunkett. WALLACETOWN At the monthly meeting of the Wallacetown branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Mrs J. Gray presided over a large attendance. A letter of thanks was received from Victoria Home. The roll call, “Why did I join the W.D.F.U.,” was very well responded to. The competitions resulted: Vase of flowers, Miss Buick 1, Miss J. Gray 2, Mrs Jolly 3. Best bloom, Miss Buick 1, Mrs Alderson 2, Miss J. Gray 3. Mr Lennie, of Invercargill, gave a very instructive talk on gardening which was very much enjoyed by all present. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames R. N. Gunther, J. S. Jenkins and Jolly.
